GOD OUR REFUGE

What does a wise child do when there is a sudden storm? He doesn’t analyze the wind or measure the rain. He runs straight to the nearest shelter and waits there until the danger passes. He knows the shelter doesn’t stop the storm—but it keeps him safe in the midst of the storm. Taking refuge in the Lord is much the same. We don’t run to God because the trouble disappears, but because His presence is always a place of safety, even when things are tough. He is a “Refuge.”

Refuge defined: a condition of being safe or sheltered from pursuit, danger, or trouble. A refuge is a safe place, such as a building or even another country, as in “they sought refuge from the war by leaving their homeland,” or it is a simple, personal place of comfort — like a friend’s couch. Synonyms include stronghold, haven, sanctuary, retreat, asylum. Often paired with “fortress,” “shelter,” or “high tower” to emphasize complete safety and inaccessibility to enemies.

In the Bible, under Mosaic law (Num 35:6-28), God provided “Cities of Refuge.” These cities served as safe zones for those who committed unintentional homicide, protecting them from avengers until a proper trial could occur. but the refuge did no good unless the individual ran to the refuge and stayed there.

The Psalms frequently portray God as a refuge, a rock, or a shield—a place for believers to flee for protection, comfort, and, to find safety. A refuge represents God’s mercy, justice, and power to save His people. It implies a place to run to in times of fear, anxiety, danger, or simply for times of refreshment. The refuge is there, but again it does us no good unless we run to Him and stay in His presence. Look at just a few testimonials.

Psalm 46:1: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

Psalm 91:2: “I will say of the LORD, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’”

Psalm 94:22 “The Lord has been my Stronghold, and my God the Rock of my Refuge.”

God is indeed a place of safety and comfort for us as His children. But we must run to Him and stay with Him. In His presence is fullness of joy!

When to Seek Refuge:

  • During Times of Trouble: When facing, oppression, or anxiety.
  • When Feeling Weary or Overwhelmed: During times of burnout or spiritual exhaustion.
  • When Facing Uncertainty: Such as financial, professional, or political instability.

Practical Steps to Take Refuge in the Lord:

  • Abide in Jesus Christ: Establish an intimate, ongoing relationship with God through Jesus, recognizing Him as the ultimate source of protection.
  • Turn to God in Prayer: Actively voice your fears, anxieties, and situations to God. Leave your burdens at His feet. Allow His presence to comfort you in the midst of chaos.
  • Study and Trust the Word: Read and meditate on the Bible to understand God’s character (e.g., faithful, loving, all-powerful) and His promises.
  • Surrender Control: Abandon self-reliance and a “do-it-yourself” mentality. Stop trying to manage, manipulate, or worry through situations on your own.
  • Recall Past Faithfulness: Remind yourself of how God has helped you in the past to gain confidence for the present.

Ultimately, taking refuge in the Lord means making a conscious decision to turn to Him as your “safe place”. Taking refuge in the Lord means actively trusting in God as your ultimate source of safety, peace, and strength during times of trouble or fear, rather than relying on self-sufficiency.

IN THE LOVE OF CHRIST JESUS OUR LORD.
