Ken’s Korner

Encouragement from your pastor

Hello my dear friends. Over the course of 40 plus years in ministry, I have learned a few things. One of the things which stands out is the need to have a correct perspective on who we are as God’s children. In my younger years, I had mistakenly, bought into the idea that to be a “good” Christian I must recognize that I am nothing but a sinner saved by Grace. This sounds correct on the surface, but it leads to a false humility and often it leads to ineffectual service to our God.

Allow me to explain. Let’s begin by looking at Romans 12:3.

For through the grace given to me (this is Paul speaking) I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but think so as to have sound judgement, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith.

Cleary there are two facets to our self-evaluation. The first is true humility. Don’t think too highly of yourself. We do need to recognize that we are not the greatest person who ever walked this earth. We need to realize our dependence upon God, His strength, His grace, His wisdom.

The second is that we need to have a realistic view of who we are! Think so as to have sound judgement of who God has created us to be!  We have been created in the image of God! We have been fearfully and wonderfully made! We have been given gifts by God to be used to serve Him and His people. A correct understanding of our talents, gifts, abilities enable us to serve God more fully. How do we gain a correct view of our talents, gifts, and abilities? One of the best ways is to seek out those who know us best and to ask them to help us understand ourselves more accurately. My friends, God doesn’t make junk! He has given you gifts that this body needs. Take some time to read Romans 12:3-8 and 1 Corinthians 12 noticing specifically how God intends His church to function. I implore you seek to know your gifts and then ask God how you can use those gifts to build up this body of believers here at Lewisville Bible church.

IN THE LOVE OF JESUS, THE MESSIAH
