PRINCIPLES FOR UNITY
One of the most important things to our Savior is Unity within the body of Christ, His church. This is seen in numerous places but none more powerful than John 17 where we have the Lord’s Prayer for His disciples and for all those who would believe in Him through their ministry. (That includes us!!!) Specifically in verse 21-23 where Jesus asks the Father to help us be perfected in unity even as He and the Father are in perfect unity! So how do we become perfect in our unity? Allow me to point out three principles which will help us in this journey.
ONE:
Put on love which is the perfect bond of unity.
Colossians 3:14
Here we see that Love is a choice and a responsibility. (Elsewhere we see that Love is a fruit of abiding, this abiding makes the putting on an easier choice.) This Love we are to put on has been modeled for us by Jesus, which is why Paul uses His love as our measuring rod in Ephesians 5:1-2. “Walk in Love, just as Christ has loved you.”
TWO: We are to choose forgiveness! In Ephesians 4:32 we are commanded to forgive one another, just as God has forgiven you. When was the last time you stopped to think about how much God has forgiven you? How often He has forgiven you. How then could we ever say; “I just can’t forgive them…”
THREE: We are to prefer one-another’s interests above our own. (Philippians 2:1-11) When we learn to have the attitude of Jesus, who placed our interests above His own, we will be far less likely to create strife and division.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if LBC was known for our unity, our love for our Savior and for one another? This is my prayer for each of us here at LBC!
